Carrying a baby changes the center of gravity and puts a lot of stress on the back, neck, abdominal muscles, and shoulders. Pregnancy also relaxes the ligaments, so that the pelvic joints are less stable, and changes the posture, pulling the pelvis forward. The extra weight may cause an aching lower back.
Massage may decrease stress and promote relaxation, helping to cope with discomfort of being pregnant.
Prenatal massage shares many of the goals of regular massage – to relax tense muscles, ease sore spots, improve prenatal massage circulation and mobility, and just feels good. It is also tailored specifically to the needs of pregnant women and their changing bodies.
Most pregnant women find it uncomfortable to lie face down on a traditional massage table once the belly has started to grow and it is not a good idea to lie flat on the back either, particularly past mid-pregnancy, because the weight of the uterus puts too much pressure on the vein that returns blood from the legs to the heart.
Most pregnant women lie on their side with pillows, wedges, or a full-length body pillow for support.
